Load Testing
When does my crane need load tested?
Load testing is a common source of confusion for many of our customers for a number of reasons. First, many people are often unclear or unfamiliar with the OSHA standards specifying requirements for load testing. Second, due to references to consensus ANSI standards in OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.179, overhead and gantry cranes, there is some confusion as to whether load tests SHALL or SHOULD be performed.
The short answer for when a crane needs load testing is:
- New Overhead crane systems SHALL be load tested prior to being placed into service.
- Existing crane system SHALL be load tested after modification or re-rating.
If you have questions about when to perform load tests on your Overhead Crane or Gantry Crane please contact us or call at 800-509-6131
In August of 2009 OSHA issued a Standard Interpretation for 1910.179(k), which clarifies when load tests need to be performed.
